For a nearby outing from Funchal, I would combine Cabo Girão with Câmara de Lobos. Its cliff-top setting looks along the south coast; the glass platform is a separate visitor facility. Check access and admission for your date, allowing for parking and the approach on foot. You do not have to step onto the glass if it makes you uncomfortable.

Eira do Serrado is the alternative for a valley view over Curral das Freiras. Reaching the viewpoint involves a path rather than a view from the driver's seat. Treat it as a separate inland detour, not an automatic addition to Cabo Girão because they appear close on a map.

Sunrise and sunset

Choose Pico do Arieiro for high ridges and cloud-filled mountain scenery. Seeing the view does not require completing PR1. Visibility and wind matter more than the exact hour. Drive up or back in darkness only if you are comfortable with the road; sunset is not automatically quieter or easier.

Easy stops vs detours

At the eastern tip, distinguish the roadside Ponta do Rosto viewpoint from the PR8 hike. PR8 covers 4 km plus 4 km back. Choose Ponta do Rosto for photographs with less walking; for PR8, consider wind, lack of shade, footwear and reservations. A photograph of the peninsula does not reveal the effort involved in reaching its camera position.

Choose one of these areas per day. Funchal works for separate outings to each; a western base shortens some returns but lengthens the eastern outing. With children, railings, glass platforms and cliff edges need close supervision. A short approach does not remove the need for secure footing.

Budget bands are outing allowances per adult for food, possible admissions and shared transport for two, excluding accommodation and flights. Check the particular facility's extra charges before driving.
