Orientation
Plan your stay
Kaş suits a town stay with harbour evenings and boat excursions. Kalkan is nearer Patara and offers a different accommodation choice, especially when you want a holiday property with several bedrooms.
Kekova names the island-and-bay area near Üçağız and Kaleköy. The tour label does not specify a departure port, shore visit or swimming stops.

For three nights, I would choose one base, reserve a full Kekova day and visit one beach on the other day. Switching hotels between Kaş and Kalkan adds little on a short stay.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Using Kekova as a harbour address
Üçağız, Çayağzı/Andriake and Kaş are different departure points. Match your meeting point to the ticket.
Expecting to swim over the ruins
View the sunken archaeological area from the boat; swimming stops belong at other permitted locations.
Treating Kaputaş as a quick roadside photo
Use permitted parking and allow for both directions of the long access stairway.
Travel planning answers
Planning questions
Kaş or Kalkan?+
Kaş for harbour and town evenings; Kalkan if Patara or a particular holiday property is the priority. Check slopes and actual walking routes.
Where do Kekova boats depart?+
Options include Üçağız, Çayağzı/Andriake near Demre and Kaş. Some packages include a road transfer, so confirm the actual boarding point.
Can I swim in the sunken city?+
No. Swimming and diving are prohibited in the archaeological zone. Boats may offer other permitted swimming stops.
Can I take a pushchair to Kaputaş?+
The roughly 200-step beach approach is not a convenient pushchair route. Choose another specific access point if mobility is limited.
How long should I stay?+
Three nights give two full days; four add a day for weather flexibility or a slower visit.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
For one full boat day, a beach day and evenings in the same town.
Skip if
You want a broad sandy beach immediately outside the hotel every day and no excursion journeys.
With kids
Kaputaş has roughly 200 steps from the road and is not a pushchair-access beach. Check boat shade, lifejackets and steps during shore visits.
Budget range
Low
EUR 75–130 per person/day
Mid

Guide details
Pick one base for three or four nights
Kaş works when harbour life, restaurants and boat trips shape your stay. In Kalkan, compare specific holiday houses and apartments: several bedrooms may suit a group, but a hillside property can require a journey for every beach or restaurant visit. Kaş does not guarantee a flat beach walk from every room either.
Choose by location and access rather than broad labels such as quiet or upscale. I would avoid changing hotels between the two on a three-night stay. The onward journey to Fethiye already introduces another base change.
Choose your Kekova boarding point first
Üçağız sits beside the sheltered bay area. Çayağzı, also called Andriake, is near Demre and is a different departure point. Trips also operate from Kaş. Check whether the advertised excursion actually boards there or first transfers you by road to another harbour.
Allow a whole excursion day. Ask about sailing time, shade, lunch, a possible Kaleköy/Simena landing and its steps. “Kekova” in the title answers none of those questions. A short road transfer may suit a shorter boat route; a direct departure from Kaş avoids that organised road connection.
View the ruins and swim elsewhere
The official UNESCO destination account identifies the sunken city at Kekova as an archaeological area where swimming and diving are prohibited. View the remains from aboard. Swimming stops belong at other explicitly permitted locations selected for local conditions.
Kaleköy and Simena Castle lie opposite the island. Climbing to the castle is a separate shore visit needing time and suitable footwear. It is not automatically included in every fare or itinerary.
Choose Patara or Kaputaş without rushing both
Patara combines a long sandy beach with an ancient site. Give the ruins their own time if you want to explore them, and check admission and beach-protection rules. Kaputaş is the smaller cove beside the coast road: official Antalya guidance describes approximately 200 steps to reach it. Carrying beach equipment down is only half the journey; the return climbs back up.
With three nights, arrive on day 1, visit Kekova on day 2, choose one beach on day 3 and leave on day 4. A fourth night adds a free day before departure. Do not commit it elsewhere if it is your fallback for a postponed boat trip.
The daily budget bands are broad editorial allowances per person for two adults sharing accommodation and local transport, including food. Flights, boat excursions and special admissions are additional. Compare current total quotations; these are not surveyed prices.
