Orientation

Compare the total, not an isolated daily rate

An extra day changes rental duration, food and often the number of room nights. This guide therefore compares the same two adults sharing one car and a double room.

The assumptions are explicit. Replace each with your quote; one-way fees, protection packages and paid activities are additional.

Alex Travels
Alex's Take

I would first compare the total for two and three days. In this example, adding the third day costs AUD 310 for both travellers: one rental day, one room night and food. Its value depends on the stay or return-drive buffer it creates.

Itinerary

Suggested itinerary

1 day / no overnight

Cost comparison, not a recommendation for a rushed full loop.

  1. 1AUD 80 car + 70 food for two + 90 fuel + 20 parking reserve = AUD 260 shared.
  2. 2AUD 130 each; actual collection and return must fit one charged rental day.

2 days / 1 night

One shared double room.

  1. 1AUD 160 car + 160 room + 140 food + 90 fuel + 20 parking reserve = AUD 570 shared.
  2. 2AUD 285 each for the trip; an average of AUD 142.50 per person/day.

3 days / 2 nights

Two room nights for the same two adults.

  1. 1AUD 240 car + 320 rooms + 210 food + 90 fuel + 20 parking reserve = AUD 880 shared.
  2. 2AUD 440 each for the trip; an average of about AUD 147 per person/day.

Bases

Best base areas

Best for

Apollo Bay

One night on the two-day loop

Pros

  • Break the drive after the eastern coast
  • Compare rooms with suitable meal arrangements

Watch-outs

  • Twelve Apostles and the Melbourne return remain for the next day

Best for

Port Campbell

Second night on the three-day loop

Pros

  • Separate the viewpoint day from the long return
  • Close to western coastal stops

Watch-outs

  • Budget the extra room night and rental time

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Equating travel days with charged rental days

Collection and return times can change the bill. The actual quote determines the charge.

Adding the room again for each person

Two adults share one room in the example. Add the room amount once to the shared total.

Reading the scenario as a market quote

All figures are assumptions. Replace rental and lodging with offers for the same dates and inclusions.

Travel planning answers

Budget questions

Who do the daily ranges apply to?+

They are rough editorial guidance for two adults sharing a car and double room, including food and running travel costs. Not live prices; add flights, protection packages, one-way fees and major activities.

How much is the three-day example?+

AUD 880 shared, or AUD 440 each for three days and two nights. Replace the stated assumptions with actual quotes.

What does the extra night cost?+

The example rises from AUD 570 for two days to AUD 880 for three: 80 more for the car, 160 for the room and 70 for food. Fuel and the parking reserve stay constant for comparison.

Is a camper cheaper?+

Compare minimum rental, handover time, fuel and booked sites with car plus rooms. If you already have a camper, only the additional costs of this section matter.

How should costs be shared?+

Record car, fuel, rooms and shared meals as total group expenses first. Keep personal activities and purchases separate.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Essential before booking if route length, vehicle choice or accommodation style could change your plan.

Skip if

If the car and rooms are booked, calculate the remaining fuel, food, parking and selected activities.

With kids

Families should budget for groceries, snacks, parking, flexible stays and fewer late restaurant decisions.

Car rental and campervan considerations

Compare the rental days actually charged first. A late return can cost more even when you call the trip two days. A camper adds handover, minimum rental and booked sites. If the vehicle is already part of a longer Australia trip, calculate only the additional costs of this section.

Fuel, food and accommodation

The example covers two adults, one car and a shared double room. Assumptions are AUD 80 per rental day, 160 per room night, 70 daily food for both, 90 total fuel and 20 total parking reserve. Holding fuel and parking constant only simplifies comparison; a different route changes them. None is a current offer.

1, 2 and 3 day cost differences

  • 1 day / no overnight: 80 car + 0 rooms + 70 food + 90 fuel + 20 parking reserve = AUD 260 shared.
  • 2 days / 1 night: 160 car + 160 room + 140 food + 90 fuel + 20 parking reserve = AUD 570 shared.
  • 3 days / 2 nights: 240 car + 320 rooms + 210 food + 90 fuel + 20 parking reserve = AUD 880 shared.

The second version costs AUD 285 each for the trip, the third AUD 440. Adding the third day costs AUD 310 shared. The one-day scenario is only a cost calculation, not a recommendation to compress the same coastal stops into one day.

Before booking, add protection packages, child seats, one-way fees, paid tours and the rental days actually required. For self-catering, check that a kitchen is provided; a kettle is not a cooking facility.

Shared costs and currency notes

Record the shared total first, then each person’s share. Currency conversion changes the display, not the Australian cost assumptions. Card or bank charges may be additional. WanderSpend can keep shared and personal expenses separate and connected to the trip.

Where to go next

The itinerary allocates one or two nights. The driving tips help match collection and return. Family occupancy needs a separate calculation in the kids guide.
