Why driving decisions matter
Costa Rica road trips are not hard because of distance alone. They are hard when travelers ignore road quality, rain, daylight, insurance questions and lodge access.
A car can make Arenal, Monteverde and the Pacific coast easier. It does not make Tortuguero road-accessible, and it is not always calmer than shuttles on a very short trip.
I would book transport after the route, not before it. A rental car is useful when it solves base-to-base movement, but it should not force you into a route that is too ambitious.

Car or shuttle?
For Arenal, Monteverde and the Pacific coast, a rental car can make the trip easier. You control stops, food, luggage and timing. But that freedom only helps if the route is realistic.
Shuttles are calmer when you have a simple route and do not want to handle road conditions or insurance questions. Mixed routes can work well: shuttle or transfer to Tortuguero, rental car for inland and coast.
What changes the decision
Ask each remote property to confirm its recommended approach and required vehicle type. Ground clearance and four-wheel drive are different features; an SUV label does not reliably settle either question. Send the recommended route to the rental supplier and check which roads the contract permits.
Compare offers using the same pickup and return locations. Record the total, deposit, excess, included and optional cover, additional drivers and any one-way fee. The official tourism site recommends checking the contract, vehicle condition and safety equipment at collection. Keep photos and the supplier’s emergency number with your travel documents.
For an early flight home, I would spend the last night near the airport. A long coastal transfer leaves too little certainty for car return and check-in.
Final verdict
Book once the route, access roads and full cost are clear. If Tortuguero comes first, consider collecting the car after the boat-based stay.
