La Fortuna is one of the easiest places to start a Costa Rica nature trip because logistics are forgiving. Food, tours, hot springs and short drives are close together.
The area can feel busy, but that is also its strength for first-time visitors. You can get volcano atmosphere, rainforest activities and recovery time without complicated route design.
Arenal is not the place to prove how many activities fit into a day. Pick one main nature activity and compare a separate hot-spring ticket with a hotel that includes access before paying for both.

Arenal is the natural first anchor after San José or Alajuela. It is easier than Monteverde, more structured than remote rainforest and useful for getting into Costa Rica's activity rhythm.

Choose one main daytime activity: volcano area trails, hanging bridges, waterfall time or a guided wildlife walk. Then protect the evening. The hot spring part of Arenal is not filler; it is what keeps the route from feeling like a checklist.
Final verdict
Choose La Fortuna town if walking to dinner matters; compare the actual driving distance from a rural lodge to your chosen park entrance. For a first volcano walk, look at the national park’s Coladas sector; the Península sector offers a different lake-and-forest visit. These are visits around the volcano, not summit hikes. Check the SINAC park information for current trail access before choosing a route.
