Aveiro and Costa Nova Guide
Use Aveiro and Costa Nova as a light coastal stop before or after Porto, not as the main reason to stretch a northern route.

Guide details
Half a day in Aveiro
Begin at Canal Central and walk through Beira Mar. Art Nouveau façades and waterways explain the town better than the familiar Venice comparison. A moliceiro cruise is an optional tourist outing; walking also gives you a complete experience of the centre. Before booking, check its length and departure point so it does not consume all your available time.
For art and history, Museu de Aveiro in the former Convento de Jesus is an alternative to the boat. The official city overview treats the canal neighbourhoods and museum as different walking options.
Costa Nova needs a separate transfer
The familiar striped palheiros are in Costa Nova, not central Aveiro. Allow a separate car, bus or taxi journey. If arriving by train from Porto, check the onward connection and last useful return; a rail ticket does not take you directly to the houses.
The lagoon frontage with houses and restaurants and the Atlantic beach on the other side are different places to spend time. A short photo walk needs less time than swimming, changing and lunch. The palheiros are occupied or used buildings; photograph them from public space.
Day trip or stopover?
With a full day, choose Aveiro in the morning and Costa Nova in the afternoon. With half a day, stay in Aveiro. It lies south of Porto, so it is an outing in the opposite direction from a northern Minho route, not a stop you automatically pass. An overnight is most useful for continuing south or spending longer at the beach.
Budget and return
The bands are full travel-day allowances per adult for two sharing accommodation, food, local transport and selected admissions, excluding arrival travel. For a day trip, count only extra tickets or car, parking, food and boat costs; do not count the already-paid Porto night twice. Use the itinerary for the next northern stage.
