Orientation
Three different coastal stays
Port Stephens gives you time around the bay at Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay. In the middle, choose Coffs Harbour for the jetty waterfront and services, or Bellingen for an inland town stay.
Byron Bay receives at least two nights so a coastal walk and beach time are not squeezed into a late arrival. The Gold Coast needs its own reason, such as a planned theme-park day.

I would choose Coffs Harbour for a straightforward overnight break. Bellingen earns the detour when you also want a morning there. Packing both into one night adds little.

Bases
Best base areas
Best for
Nelson Bay / Shoal Bay
A Port Stephens stay with a full coastal day
Pros
- Bay walks and places to eat
- Two nights allow a separate excursion
Watch-outs
- Sand-dune tours need their own booking
Best for
Coffs Harbour or Bellingen
Choose one middle-route base
Pros
- Coffs: services and jetty waterfront
- Bellingen: an inland town stay
Watch-outs
- Bellingen involves a detour; do not make both mandatory
Best for
Byron Bay
Coastal walking and beach time without daily moves
Pros
- Two nights create a full day
- A central room may reduce driving
Watch-outs
- Compare parking and room costs before booking
Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Counting Sydney sightseeing inside the drive
The six or nine days begin when you leave Sydney; city sightseeing beforehand needs its own nights.
Booking a dune or boat tour on a transfer day
Vehicle collection, city traffic and breaks can move arrival times. Put fixed tours on full local days.
Squeezing in the Gold Coast
A theme park needs a visit day and suitable nights; it is not a quick roadside stop.
Travel planning answers
Planning Sydney–Brisbane
How many nights are included?+
The short route has five nights and six days from Sydney; the longer version has eight nights and nine days. Add Sydney city days beforehand.
Coffs Harbour or Bellingen?+
Coffs suits supplies and a straightforward coastal overnight. Choose Bellingen when you want time in the inland town.
How long is the Byron walk?+
NSW National Parks lists the 3.7 km Walgun Cape Byron circuit at one to three hours, Grade 3. Add access time and breaks, and check current closures.
Is the Gold Coast included?+
No. For a theme park or several beach days, add nights or shorten another base.
Can I travel without a car?+
Check coach or rail connections for your specific towns. This itinerary assumes a car; spontaneous coastal detours cannot simply be transferred to a timetable.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Useful for a trip with several coastal bases and a full day in Byron Bay, with Sydney and Brisbane as the city endpoints.
Skip if
If you only need to get from Sydney to Brisbane, compare a flight; the overnight stops are the purpose of this route.
With kids
The nine-day version leaves at least a full day at each coastal base. Check beach conditions locally; the full Cape Byron walk has slopes and steps.
Budget range
Low
AUD 100–160 per person/day
Mid
AUD 190–330 per person/day

Guide details
Sydney exit
This drive starts after your Sydney stay. Collect the vehicle on departure day if practical and check the rental company’s toll arrangements. The short version counts six days and five nights: Port Stephens 1, Coffs Harbour or Bellingen 1, Byron Bay 2 and Brisbane 1. Additional Sydney nights are not included.
Central Coast, Newcastle or Port Stephens
Visit NSW gives roughly 2.5 hours from Sydney to Port Stephens as a driving baseline. Vehicle collection, city traffic and breaks are additional; I would not book a fixed boat excursion immediately after arrival. Official regional planning
Search around Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay for a bay-side base. Two nights leave a full day for the waterfront, beach or a booked dune activity. If you leave Sydney late, Central Coast or Newcastle can replace the first overnight; they are not three extra mandatory stops.
Coffs Harbour or Bellingen
Treat Port Stephens to your chosen base as a transfer day with breaks. Coffs Harbour suits shopping and a walk by the jetty waterfront. Bellingen is the inland alternative when you want time in town the following morning. Do not drive into Coffs and then back to Bellingen just to collect both names. Add a farther mountain detour only with extra time and checked road conditions.
Byron Bay
Two nights create one full day. NSW National Parks lists the Walgun Cape Byron walking track as a 3.7 km circuit, one to three hours, Grade 3. It has slopes and steps rather than a continuous level promenade. Check current notices and parking before setting out, then leave the afternoon open. Official walking track
Gold Coast optional
Add the Gold Coast for a specific interest such as a theme park. It needs a visit day and additional or reallocated nights. It is excluded from the five- and eight-night plans shown here.
Brisbane finish
The final Brisbane night separates the coastal drive from a flight or the next rental leg. Check your actual return depot and hours; a city stop is not automatically the same as an airport vehicle return. Continue north with the Brisbane–Cairns guide.
The budget ranges are rough editorial estimates per person per day for two adults sharing a room and rental car, with food and running travel costs. Flights, one-way surcharges and major tours are additional; these are not current quotes.
For January, settle the seasonal route choice before the detailed bookings. The East Coast January comparison weighs Sydney–Brisbane against a tropical extension, including summer holidays and reserve days.
