Why Hiroshima deserves a deliberate pace
Hiroshima is not just another western stop. It carries emotional and historical weight, and that changes the rhythm of the visit.
The city pairs naturally with Miyajima, but the combination should not be rushed into a single exhausted day if you can avoid it.
One or two nights make the extension much more meaningful.
I would not make Hiroshima a trophy stop. Give it a night, a calm morning and room for Miyajima if you go this far west.

Allow two nights for Hiroshima and Miyajima where possible: one day for the city's memorial sites and a separate island visit. With a single night, your actual arrival and departure times determine whether both fit.
Peace Memorial Park
The park commemorates the victims of the atomic bombing of 6 August 1945. Walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome through the park toward the cenotaph and museum; admission to the museum needs separate planning.
Leave time to read and pause. Families may find that discussing the historical context before visiting matters more than covering every memorial.
Museum and River Breaks
Personal stories and objects in the Peace Memorial Museum convey the consequences of the atomic bombing. The exhibits can be distressing. With children, decide together how much to see, and avoid a tight train connection afterward.
Official visitor guidance recommends online tickets and identifies time slots that require reservations. Follow its link to the museum for the rules on your date. A booked visit followed by time beside the river is easier to plan than squeezing the exhibition between two transfers.
Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine
Count the journey to the port, ferry and island walk separately. JR ferries depart from Miyajimaguchi; a pass covering this service does not automatically cover other boats. The operator lists the island visitor tax separately from the fare.
Check the tide, your return sailing and the seasonal opening hours at Itsukushima Shrine. Seeing the torii from the shore is separate from entering the shrine corridors. For a short half day, stay around the shrine and waterfront; adding a mountain walk requires its own time and weather check.
Okonomiyaki Evening
Shintenchi and Okonomimura offer places to settle over dinner. Pick a restaurant by opening time, menu and queue. For allergies or vegetarian requirements, ask about stock, sauces and shared cooking surfaces as well as the main ingredients.

A hotel near Hiroshima Station simplifies Shinkansen arrival and departure. Riverside accommodation near Peace Memorial Park suits a visit focused on the memorials, with a separate transfer to the station.

What I Would Prioritize
With one full day, I would choose the park and museum. With two, I would add Miyajima. A late arrival and early departure do not provide a full sightseeing day simply because they fall on two calendar dates.
Where to Go Next
Himeji is on the journey back toward Osaka. A castle stop needs time for luggage, the walk in both directions and your next reserved train.
