Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Count the travel block incorrectly

The short Vík return route excludes the lagoon. An early flight after the return requires suitable additional airport accommodation.

Overlook access and the travelling party

Choose short waterfall walks and the coastal area currently open; a beach scene does not promise safe access.

Guide details

One free day: choose the Golden Circle

From Reykjavík, Þingvellir – Strokkur – Gullfoss is the clearer day circuit. Allow walking time at Þingvellir and Gullfoss instead of adding four more attractions. Kerið or a thermal bath is an extra when booking arrangements and daylight allow. Keep the Reykjavík accommodation; a day outing does not create an additional road-trip night. After an overnight flight, sleep comes before an immediate long drive.

Two days: waterfalls and Vík

For the South Coast, allow two days and one Vík night. Day 1 travels via Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss to Vík. Day 2 leaves time for an open coastal viewpoint and the return to Reykjavík. This provides a coastal stay, but not a glacier-lagoon trip. A glacier walk requires its own booked time block and should replace another activity.

Jökulsárlón needs a longer return trip

For a loop from and back to Reykjavík including the lagoon, I recommend four days and three nights: one Vík, one Hof/Skaftafell, then one Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Visit Jökulsárlón on day 3 and head west again; return to Reykjavík on day 4. On a continuing Ring Road trip, you can instead finish day 3 in Höfn. That open-ended stage does not include the return to the airport.

Combine both routes over three days

Day 1: Golden Circle, night in Selfoss. Day 2: South Coast waterfalls, night in Vík. Day 3: a coastal visit subject to current access, then return to Reykjavík. This is two nights away over three outing days; the nights before and after the excursion and the arrival and departure days sit outside this block. Omit Jökulsárlón.

Check the tour contents and coastal access

A guided tour handles the driving but may also change or be cancelled. Compare pickup, driving time, stops and included admissions. As checked on 7 September 2026, Safetravel advises viewpoint-only access at Reynisfjara because of high waves and storms. Do not rely on older beach photographs or an originally advertised stop. Check current advice shortly before visiting; rockfall and surf remain hazards even without a red warning.
