Orientation
Plan your stay
Viewing the rock tombs from the Dalyan River is different from visiting the ancient city of Kaunos. If both matter, your itinerary needs an actual landing and archaeological-site visit.
Two nights give you one river-and-beach day. Three nights add a separate morning at Kaunos without squeezing ruins and swimming into a tight tour schedule.

I would choose three nights if Kaunos is a priority. That gives the archaeological site a cooler morning and İztuzu its own beach day.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Confusing tomb views with a Kaunos visit
Sailing past the tomb cliffs does not include walking through the ancient city.
Mixing beach access points
Boat and road access serve different beach ends. Plan a matching outward and return connection.
Remaining on the beach at night
GoTürkiye lists restricted access from 8pm to 8am; also follow current local signs.
Travel planning answers
Planning questions
Are two nights enough?+
For arrival, one full river/beach day and departure, yes. Three nights work better for a proper separate Kaunos visit.
Does every boat tour visit Kaunos?+
The tombs are visible from the river. Landing, access to the archaeological site and time to explore must be explicitly included.
Can I visit İztuzu at night?+
Official tourism guidance lists an 8pm–8am closure to protect turtles. Follow current signs and local instructions.
How do I avoid disturbing nests?+
Stay outside marked or fenced areas and do not place umbrellas or loungers there. Do not touch or pursue wildlife for photos.
Does Dalyan work before a Dalaman flight?+
It can be your final base, but the airport transfer needs its own time allowance. Do not schedule an uncertain boat return directly before check-in.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
For river scenery, a protected beach and a distinct archaeological visit in the same stay.
Skip if
Your route stays between Antalya and Kaş, or you only have time for a brief photo stop.
With kids
Confirm boat shade, suitable lifejackets and the return arrangement. Keep clear of marked nests; give Kaunos its own time and heat allowance.

Guide details
Separate the tomb view from the ancient city
The rock-cut tomb façades can be viewed from Dalyan’s riverfront and from a river boat. That does not require a full archaeological visit. Kaunos itself is a separate excursion on land, with paths through the ancient city.
Ask what a tour labelled “Kaunos” includes. Does it mean the tomb view, or a landing, access to the ruins and enough time ashore? An independently arranged river crossing still leaves the journey to the entrance, admission and return to organise. Seeing the cliffs does not complete that visit.
Match your İztuzu arrival and return points
Boats through the delta and the road approach serve different ends of the long beach. Save the exact landing or parking point and confirm the return before spreading out along the sand. For an organised trip, departure location, time on the beach, last return and shade aboard matter more than a lengthy list of advertised stops.
İztuzu is also a nesting beach. Official visitor guidance lists restricted night access from 8pm to 8am. Follow current signs, remain outside marked nests and do not put umbrellas or loungers in them. DEKAMER provides turtle-conservation information; check visiting arrangements with the centre rather than expecting guaranteed wildlife encounters.
Give two distinct outings three nights
With two nights, arrive, spend the next day on the river and beach, then leave on day 3. Add one night for a more thorough archaeological visit. Use the extra morning for Kaunos and leave the afternoon for a break and Dalyan itself. This avoids treating the ruins as a hot, hurried stop on an overloaded boat circuit.
Dalyan fits after Fethiye or before a flight from Dalaman. Continuing to Datça creates another driving day; Kaunos, beach time and a peninsula transfer do not all belong in one afternoon.
Compare the services included in the cost
The daily ranges are editorial allowances per person for two adults sharing accommodation and local transport, including food. They are not current operator quotations. International flights, private boats and special admissions are additional.
Compare a boat package by its actual inclusions: return travel, lunch, admission and time ashore are separate items. Save the meeting point and return arrangement alongside the tour name.
