Arles Travel Guide

Arles provides a full city day for Roman buildings and specific Van Gogh locations. Three nights allow a second full day in the Camargue. On a day trip from Avignon, leave the Camargue outside the plan.

Old town and Roman heritage

Start at the amphitheatre and decide whether to add the nearby Roman theatre. They are different buildings; an arena is not a Roman stage theatre. Continue to Place de la République and Saint-Trophime, then through the old town to the Rhône. Half a day with breaks is a useful personal allowance for the amphitheatre and city walk.

Check admission and any combination tickets for the monuments you actually want. Events can alter interior visits. With children, one Roman building can be more engaging than several consecutively. An exposed summer walk needs water and a longer midday break.

Specific Van Gogh locations

The garden at Espace Van Gogh, the former hospital, links the modern city walk with a subject painted by the artist. The official Van Gogh circuit identifies other city locations; select a few rather than following the entire trail.

The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles is a different choice, with changing exhibitions. Check the Fondation’s current programme if original works are important to you. Visiting Arles does not itself guarantee a particular Van Gogh painting collection.

Give the Camargue its own day

For a first nature outing, choose Parc ornithologique de Pont de Gau near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The regional park’s birdwatching guide identifies this visitor area. Check current opening, admission and paths with the operator before travelling; sightings of free-living birds are not guaranteed.

Make the observation walk the main activity, with binoculars, sun protection and insect repellent if needed. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer can follow as a short coastal stop if energy and time permit. A riding excursion would be a separately booked activity with age, experience and operator conditions, not an automatic part of the nature day.

Base or stop?

Two nights mean arrival, a full Arles day and departure. Three nights add a Camargue day. On a shorter trip, keep Avignon as your base and visit Arles for the day. Arles station is north of the centre; allow for the luggage walk and last return connection. A car or suitable booked excursion is more useful for Camargue access than an unchecked regional-train plan.

Consider accommodation, monument tickets and the nature outing together in your Provence budget. Another night pays off only if it creates an actual full visiting day.
